Cannabis and regulated retail

Cannabis websites that stay compliant.

Age gate, license number, menu, delivery zones, Prop 65, and California's advertising rules, handled in the build and checked every quarter. Built in the Bay Area for dispensaries, delivery services, brands, and the businesses around them.

Most web studios treat a dispensary like a coffee shop with an age pop-up. Most cannabis agencies are in Vermont, Boston, or Los Angeles, selling remotely into the Bay Area at three to five times the local rate. We are the other option: a Bay Area studio that has shipped cannabis work, reads the rules the site has to meet, and prices like a local.

A cannabis website is a piece of marketing under California law. Every page carries obligations a regular site does not. We build so you stop asking what a page costs and start asking whether it keeps you legal.

Six rules, and where each one lives in the build.

Each of these is cited to the statute or regulation it comes from. Rules change, and this list is checked at every quarterly audit.

01

Age affirmation before the site talks to anyone

California requires a method of age affirmation before any direct, individualized communication a licensee controls. We build the gate to render before the first paint, keep keyboard and screen-reader users inside it, remember the answer, and cover the chat agent and SMS opt-in too, not just the front door.

02

Your license number on every page that markets

All advertising and marketing must legibly identify the licensee by license number. A website is marketing. We put the number in the site footer and on every menu, promotion, and landing page, and check it again whenever the license renews.

03

The 71.6 percent rule for anything you place

Digital advertising may only run where at least 71.6 percent of the audience is reasonably expected to be 21 or older, backed by audience data. We do not run ads, and Google and Meta largely refuse cannabis ads anyway, so the site and search are the channel. We build the site so it earns the traffic instead.

04

No free product, no giveaways, nothing that appeals to kids

State regulations bar advertising free cannabis goods, buy-one-get-one offers, contests and raffles, and any image or word that appeals to children, including cartoons and candy language. We write and review promotion copy against that list before it goes up.

05

Prop 65 warnings where the purchase happens

For online sales the warning, or a clearly marked WARNING link, has to sit on the product page before checkout, not buried in a footer. Cannabis smoke and delta-9 THC are on the list. We wire the warning into the product template so every new product carries it.

06

Delivery zones that match the jurisdictions

Licensed delivery can reach across the state, but cities can restrict it, and your license sets where you may operate. We build the address check to say yes or no by jurisdiction, so the site never promises a delivery you cannot legally make.

    Get help with the gaps

Four kinds of cannabis business, four different sites.

    Dispensaries

A store site that ranks for its own city, with the live menu embedded or built native, pickup and delivery flows, hours and location structured for Google, and the compliance layer on every page.

    Delivery services

Delivery-only operators live or die on search and the address check. We build the zone logic, the menu, and the location pages that let a city find you before a directory does.

    Brands

Strain and product pages, a store locator that pulls from your retail partners, a wholesale intake that routes to sales, and, if you want it, a phone agent that answers the line and hands buyers over.

    The businesses around cannabis

Glass, packaging, events, hydroponics, testing labs, consultants. Less regulated, still shadow-banned on ads, and still best served by a site that is fast and a search strategy that does not depend on Meta.

    Compliance Care

    The quarterly audit, in writing.

Compliance is not a launch-day feature. Licenses renew, cities change delivery rules, menu providers change embeds, and someone on staff posts a giveaway. Compliance Care is our top care plan: hosting, security, updates, an hour of edits a month, and this checklist every quarter, with a dated record you can hand to a regulator or a landlord.

Compliance Care is $349 / mo

    • Age gate works on every entry point, including deep links and the chat agent
    • License number present, legible, and current on every marketing page
    • Promotion copy checked against the free-goods and appeals-to-children rules
    • Prop 65 warning present on every product page before checkout
    • Delivery zones re-checked against current local restrictions
    • Menu integration (Dutchie, Jane, Weedmaps, or native) loading, indexed, and matching the store
    • Legal pages, privacy notice, and SMS consent language reviewed
    • A dated, written record of every check, for your files and your regulator

    What operators ask us first.

    Are you lawyers?

No. We build websites and we read the rules that apply to them. This page and our audits describe how we build and what we check; they are not legal advice. Your compliance counsel has the final word, and we are happy to work from their checklist instead of ours.

Which menu providers do you work with?

Dutchie, Jane, and Weedmaps embeds, plus native menus fed from your point of sale where the provider offers an API. Embedded menus are quick; native menus rank. We will tell you which one fits your budget and your search goals.

Can you run our ads or social media?

No, and for cannabis it mostly cannot be done anyway. Google and Meta reject nearly all cannabis advertising. We work search and your own site, which are the channels that stay open. If a compliant paid placement is right for you, we will say so and refer you.

Do you gate the whole site or just the menu?

The whole site, by default, because the age affirmation rule covers any individualized communication you control and search engines can still index a gated site when the gate is built correctly. We can scope it to the menu if counsel advises that for your license type.

What does Compliance Care actually include?

Everything in Care+, which is hosting, security, updates, and an hour of edits a month, plus the quarterly audit listed on this page and a written record of it. It is $349 a month, and the details are on the pricing page.

Do you work with hemp and THC-A businesses?

We work with licensed California cannabis operators and the businesses that serve them. For hemp-derived products we will look at your situation first, because the rules changed in 2024 and keep moving.

Send us your license type and your city

We will tell you what the site has to carry, what it should carry to rank, and what it will cost. No deck, no retainer to find out.
